On Friday, 14 August, our school hosted an exciting Debate Showcase from 15:30 to 17:30. The event brought together some of our most talented young speakers, with learners divided into two categories: the Juniors, consisting of Grades 8 and 9, and the Seniors, consisting of Grades 10 and 11. The showcase provided learners with an opportunity to demonstrate the debating skills they had developed through their training and preparation.
The Senior debate focused on the thought-provoking topic: “Social media companies should be held legally responsible for harmful content.” The topic encouraged learners to consider the influence of social media on society and to construct logical, well-supported arguments. The semi-finals were highly competitive, with both boys’ teams emerging victorious and securing their places in the final. The Senior final will be held at a date still to be confirmed.
The Junior debates were equally impressive. The girls’ team emerged victorious, following a particularly intense final. The match was extremely close, with both teams demonstrating confidence, quick thinking and determination. Every argument and rebuttal was delivered with purpose, making it clear that the learners had put significant effort into their preparation.
The Senior semi-finals were no less intense. Both teams were extremely determined to win, and the atmosphere was filled with excitement as the debaters confidently defended their positions. Watching the debates was a reminder that debating requires much more than simply speaking well; it requires critical thinking, teamwork, research, confidence and the ability to respond under pressure.
As someone who was fortunate enough to be part of one of the teams, I found the experience particularly interesting and enjoyable. Being involved in the debate allowed me to experience the excitement of presenting arguments while also learning from the opposing team. It was rewarding to see how the training and preparation translated into real debating situations.
A special thank you goes to Ms Naicker and Ms S. Mahomed, who served as adjudicators, and to Mrs Paruk, who organised the event. Their dedication and effort made the showcase possible.
Overall, the Debate Showcase was a memorable and enjoyable event. It gave learners the chance to showcase their abilities and talents while developing valuable skills that extend far beyond the debating stage.
