Beyond Yourself: The Secret Hack to a Happier, Healthier School Year

By Yusuf Latib (Grade 10A)

We live in a culture obsessed with self-optimization. Every January, we bombard ourselves with strict diets, rigid sleep routines, and endless productivity apps. But what if the ultimate wellness hack isn’t looking inward at all, but looking outward?

Research reveals a surprising truth: getting out of your own head and into your community might just be the secret to a happier, healthier, and more productive life.

Think community service is just a boring resume-padder? Think again. Helping others benefits not only your community, but you too. Volunteering can reduce stress, support mental wellbeing, and give you a stronger sense of purpose. It can also help you build confidence, make new friends, develop leadership and teamwork skills, and gain experiences that you simply cannot get inside a classroom.

There’s also a powerful stress-buffering effect. When you spend time helping others, research suggests that your body’s stress response can actually decrease. So, while volunteering won’t magically make exams or everyday pressures disappear, it can help you cope with them better. At the same time, you’re strengthening your community, meeting people from different backgrounds, and seeing firsthand that your actions can make a real difference.

There is a catch, though: motives matter. Research tracking volunteers over years found that those who sign up purely for selfish reasons—like looking good on university applications or just feeding their own ego—miss out on the health benefits entirely. The life-extending magic only kicks in when your help comes from a genuine place of empathy and a real desire to lift up those around us.

We have been conditioned and brainwashed by our culture into thinking that all our efforts should be focused on our own self-improvement. But true wellbeing is deeply social. We evolved to thrive in groups, to connect, and to care for our kith and kin.

This term, don’t just focus on better grades or hitting personal goals. Find a cause that genuinely sparks your compassion—whether it’s tutoring younger students, organizing a food drive, or cleaning up a local park. Pour your energy into something bigger than yourself. You might just find that by changing someone else’s world, you completely transform your own.
