Foundation Phase

The Foundation Phase shares the main campus of Al Falaah College, and its many outstanding facilities, together with the Pre-School, Intermediate Phase and High School. Learners are educated in a nurturing Islamic environment which aims to provide a holistic education in an environment of excellence.

Our Grade 1, 2 and 3 classes create the basis of learning by both laying a strong foundation in Mathematics and English, and by the development of critical thinking skills and creativity. Outdoor skills, developed both in sport and by the use of our playground, add a wonderful richness to children in our phase. Our focus is on extending and affirming a child’s curiosity, sense of inquiry and ability to make the correct choices. We are committed to supporting each child’s spiritual, social, emotional and intellectual development.

Our Islamically infused teaching methods are designed to inspire students to become intellectually inspired and achieve their potential within a stimulating and caring learning environment. In the Foundation Phase we aim to nurture strong Islamic values, self-confidence and effective communication skills.

Our Islamic ethos ensures that learners develop strong Islamic Values. Our vision in the Foundation Phase is towards excellence in all our endeavours, and aims to nurture our boys and girls, whose actions will be guided by the Qur’an and the Sunnah.

We have a vibrant and caring staff that have an innate desire to educate and fascinate our learners. Through regular training, and our on-going professional development programme, we support both our new and experienced educators, ensuring the strategies, methods and resources used within our school set the standards of the best practices. Our empowered and passionate staff have been trained and continue to journey in implementing 21st Century skills using thinking tools and strategies in their teaching. Our caring teachers are committed towards the recognition and encouragement of each learner’s abilities and talents, challenging their critical thinking skills, problem solving and creativity and prepared for future challenges. Learners are encouraged to give off their best in all teaching and learning. Remedial support in the form of extra lessons in the afternoons is provided for learners who struggle in aspects of teaching and learning.

Our Grade 1, 2 and 3 classes create the basis of learning by laying a strong foundation in Mathematics and English, Afrikaans, Life skills, Islamic Studies, Arabic, IsiZulu. Our program strives to develop students who are independent and life-long learners. Our Islamically infused teaching methods are designed to inspire students to become intellectually inspired and achieve their potential within a stimulating and caring learning environment. Students are encouraged to explore, experiment, wonder, inquire, practice, invent, create, imagine and play. We believe that learning should be fun and that part of our role as educators of young children is to instill a love of learning. We want all our learners to be actively engaged and involved fully with a hands-on approach to all learning experiences. Our value added learning programs support our students' natural curiosity and interests and provides opportunities for them to extend their learning

The use of iPads facilitate teaching and learning as the students are encouraged to see the world beyond their doorsteps. The facilitation of the ‘reading Eggs Programme’ beautifully integrates English skills in a fun and interactive manner. Further Math and English lessons are facilitated by means of the iPad.

Highlights and Events

All year round, students from Grade 1 upwards can take part in activities to pursue their existing interests and develop and explore new ones. From adopting an outreach programme for the ‘Old Age Home’ to creative and performing arts which culminates in our Drama productions to subject extensions such as our Market Day, we offer a range of activities to suit the diverse needs of our learners and their families. Extra-curricular activities build students' aspirations and provide them with the foundations and transferable skills to make new friends and, most importantly, have fun!

Our curriculum allows for the development of critical thinking skills and is relevant and adaptable to the needs of our pupils. Learning takes place both at school, and beyond the classroom. Team building outings, adventure trails, and thrills in the park are some of the exhilarating excursions Foundation Phase learners are exposed to. We take the fun out of the classroom by encouraging our learners to think out of the box.
