Social media platforms such as WhatsApp, Facebook and Instagram have made communication faster and more convenient, allowing information to be shared instantly. While these platforms can be beneficial, they can also be misused, resulting in the rapid spread of rumours, misinformation and unverified claims. This can cause unnecessary anxiety, damage reputations and disrupt the harmony of families, institutions and communities.
As educators and parents, we have a shared responsibility to make our commiunity aware of the negative and destructive potential of social media and to guide them towards responsible and ethical communication.
The Qur’an reminds us in Surah Al-Hujurat of the importance of verifying information before accepting or spreading it, lest we cause harm or embarrassment through misinformation. The consequences of fitnah (mischief and discord arising from unverified information) have already caused considerable distress to many families and communities.
Al Falaah College is not immune to these challenges. We are aware that parents may have their own social media and messaging groups where concerns about teachers, learners or the school are discussed and conclusions are reached without verification. While we recognise the need for communication and discussion, the spread of unverified or misleading information can be harmful and does not contribute to positive solutions.
We kindly remind parents not to fall prey to people who find pleasure in castigating families and institutions behind a cloak of anonymity. We have developed channels for communication including suggestions@alfalaah.org.za , Student Support Services and a Parent Liaison to assist parents resolve their concerns and issues, without fear or favour. Use your sincerity of niyyah to resolve issues.
