On Friday, 14 August 2026, the MultiPurpose Room (MPR) was alive with anticipation as eight determined teams took to the stage for the Debate Spotlight Evening. Learners demonstrated their skill in structured argument, engaging the audience with sharp reasoning and confident delivery.
The evening commenced with the Junior Division, where four teams debated the role of artificial intelligence in education and the workplace. Their spirited exchanges highlighted both the opportunities and challenges posed by emerging technologies.
The Senior Division elevated the atmosphere further, tackling the pressing question of whether social media companies should be held legally accountable for harm caused within schools. These debates were marked by incisive points, rapid rebuttals, and compelling counter‑arguments that kept the audience fully engaged.
The structured format provided every participant with a platform to articulate their views clearly and persuasively, ensuring that debate remained disciplined yet dynamic.
Reflecting on the experience, Grade 10 learner Faatimah Limbada remarked: “Taking part in this event was a real eye‑opener. It allowed all of us as students to gain insight into the current problem of social media use and its harms amongst teenagers.”
