Young Historians

Six enthusiastic Grade 4 to 6 learners have stepped back in time and embraced the exciting Local History Passbook Competition.

As part of the challenge, the learners visited three local history museums in Durban, where they explored stories, people and places. The journey did not end at the museum doors — the learners were also challenged to complete a creative project. With entries closing on 31 August, these young historians demonstrated curiosity and a genuine appreciation for the history that surrounds them.

We are incredibly proud of our learners and wish them the very best in the competition:

Grade 4 – Muhammad Akoob & Azhara Rasool

Grade 5 – Asma Bapekee

Grade 6 – Sumayyah Vahed, Zahra Khan & Faatimah Moolla

Learning about Heritage Day

Learners from the Foundation and Intermediate Phase were inspired by an interesting, informative talk from the Bergtheil Museum. The museum curator visited the school and spoke to the learners about the history of Heritage Day and local history museums in Durban.

She explained how Heritage Day got its name and shared the history behind the day. Learners enjoyed discovering more about South Africa’s rich cultural heritage — it was a valuable learning experience.

Echoes of the Qur’an 2026

A Celebration of the Qur’an, Qira’ah and Connection

Alhamdulillah, the Echoes of the Qur’an programme held over the weekend of 28–29 August 2026 was a resounding success and a truly memorable celebration of the Words of Allah (SWT). Al-Falaah College was honoured to host three distinguished Qurra — Qari Ismail Londt, Qari Saleem Gaibie and Qari Husain Kazi — whose beautiful recitations and inspiring messages touched the hearts of all who attended.

The programme commenced with special Jumu’ah programmes, followed by a beautifully presented public programme after Maghrib at Al-Falaah College. The response from the community was overwhelming, with the venue filled with parents, learners, educators and members of the public who gathered to listen to the Qur’an and benefit from the presence of these esteemed guests.

Restoring Dignity Through Action

Al Falaah College students, parents, and staff recently demonstrated the power of community action through the Women’s Month Hygiene Product Drive. Centred on providing essential items to young women in surrounding communities, the initiative saw the school body donate over 400 individual hygiene products, which were assembled into over 100 complete care packs.

The care packs were created to directly support students at Ihsan Girls in Chatsworth as well as Gingidlovu School as part of a collaborative outreach effort. The official handover took place on stage, where the team was warmly supported by Mrs Arun alongside Ammaarah from the Muslim Youth Movement (MYM).

Chai & Chat – Creating a Safe Space at Home

This term’s Chai & Chat focused on the important topic of creating a safe space at home, where children feel comfortable approaching their parents when they are facing challenges, making mistakes, or simply need someone to listen.

We were privileged to welcome Hlengiwe Dube from Childline, an organisation dedicated to supporting children and promoting their safety, emotional well-being and rights.

Hlengiwe delivered an engaging and heartfelt session, using relatable examples from her own experiences to demonstrate the importance of pausing before reacting, meeting children at their level, listening without immediate judgement and understanding where they are coming from.

Alhamdulillah, what made the session particularly special was the involvement of our mums. The conversation naturally grew beyond the speaker, with parents openly and safely sharing their own experiences, strategies and best practices with one another. The discussion also explored how these approaches can be rooted in the Sunnah and our Deen. It became a genuine space of shared learning and support, with mums recognising that many of us are navigating similar challenges at home.

The session was thoroughly enjoyed by all, and the warmth, honesty and wisdom shared throughout the morning highlighted just how valuable it is for parents to learn not only from experts, but from one another.

New Desks and Chairs, Alhumdulillah!

Alhamdulillah, through the Mercy of ALLAH we have started the roll-out into the classrooms of our new furniture: learners desks & chair. This is part of a whole classroom refurb which began in 2025:
1. The removal of the tiles and applying a concrete polish finish to the floors.
2. We have also completed the 2 pilot rooms with the carpentry and will soon be commissioning the fit out of “new look” classroom
3. Next will be the window shading solutions and lighting

The roll-out will take some time as we will have to sequence the fit-out.
Request your duas for a successful project!

High School – Growth and Development League Debates

The Growth and Development League (GDL), part of the Durban Central Debating League (DCDL), is designed to give those at the start of their debating journey the chance to learn debating skills and gain confidence in competitive settings.

Al Falaah College is proud to announce its participation in this initiative, which includes training workshops in August followed by debating rounds in September.

The debates, hosted at Clifton College, will challenge learners with engaging and challenging motions on education, internships, and youth narratives.
